Swim bladder — why fish do not sink (3D)
About this app
A semi-transparent perch with a visible swim bladder and gas gland drifts in a 0–100 m water column, with force arrows, a pressure gauge and the V(p) hyperbola. By Boyle's law the bladder halves at 10 m depth and the fish keeps sinking until the gas gland refills it. Reeling it in fast expands the bladder up to barotrauma.
