Vectors are linearly dependent if a closed chain can be built from them without setting all factors to zero. Three vectors in space are dependent exactly when they lie in one plane, and Gaussian elimination finds out.

A Trickster, a Phone, a Lottery Win: Linear Independence
An explainer film in five chapters, made from a real lecture: the game of the closed vector chain and why the all-zero solution does not count, when three vectors in space form a family, the definition of linear independence, and how Gaussian elimination shows that the key rows 1-2-3, 4-5-6 and 7-8-9 of a phone lie in one plane. How a film works on heyprof
Every film here listens. Pause it, ask it questions and let it continue with your own examples.
- PauseTap pause or press the space bar. The film waits right at that moment.
- AskTap “Ask” and type what you want to know. The answer comes inside the film, with picture and voice.
- Steer itTell it what to show, for example “Do this with z = 2 − 3i”. The film sets up the app and works it out.
- Try it yourselfWhile it is paused, drag points and sliders yourself. “Continue” takes you back into the film.
