Porous Media: Density Fingering
About this app
Density-driven flow in a porous medium (Darcy-Boussinesq, computed live on a 512² grid): a heavy phase above a light one is unstable — whether the front merely smears diffusively or breaks into narrow fingers is decided by the Rayleigh number. Two scenarios: unstable layering and CO₂ injection at the ceiling (the mechanism of convective dissolution in CO₂ storage); views for concentration, stream function and speed, tapping perturbs the front locally.
