The mean is the centre of gravity of all values and feels every outlier. The median is the value in the middle of the sorted list and stays put.

Building Blocks, Fahrenheit, a Chalk Line: Mean and Median
An explainer film in six chapters, made from a real lecture: the arithmetic mean as one number for the boss, a polystyrene board of building blocks that balances exactly above the mean, Celsius to Fahrenheit with one calculation instead of 365, the overall mean of two groups, and the median as the chalk line of the middle person, which stays put when the tallest grows. Pause anywhere and ask.
