With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.
Why the front camera is calibrated
The front camera behind the windscreen measures lane lines, vehicles and signs as angles in the image and computes positions on the road from them. To do so it has to know how it is mounted. After a windscreen replacement, after work on the suspension and axle geometry, or whenever the manufacturer requires it, it is calibrated again. An angular error grows with distance: Δ = d · tan α. Half a degree gives 0.44 m at 50 m and 0.87 m at 100 m, a quarter of a 3.50 m wide lane. The reference is the geometric thrust line, the bisector of the total toe angle of the rear axle.
What the app shows
A generic vehicle stands in the workshop in front of a calibration target on its stand. Thrust line and centre line are drawn on the floor, and the field of view shows where the camera looks. In the road view the app shows the detected lane lines as the camera computes them, with error brackets at 25, 50 and 100 m, and a vehicle at 50 m with its assumed position. A crop of the camera image compares “straight ahead for the camera” with the thrust line. The Procedure panel walks through five steps up to static and dynamic calibration.
Things to try
Set a yaw error of half a degree and go to the road: at 100 m the detected lane is almost a metre off. Calibrate statically with the target aligned to the thrust line, and the error disappears. Then align the target to the body and calibrate again: the thrust angle remains as an error. Load the boot or move the target by a few millimetres and watch how the lane and the measured distance to the vehicle ahead change.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the front camera need calibrating after a windscreen replacement?
- Usually yes. The camera bracket sits on the windscreen, and with the new glass the mounting position often changes by tenths of a degree. Whether and how to calibrate is specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
- What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?
- In a static calibration the camera measures a target with a known pattern at a specified distance and height in the workshop. In a dynamic calibration it learns from lane markings during a test drive. Some systems require one of the procedures, some both.
- Why is the geometric thrust line the reference?
- The vehicle drives straight ahead along the thrust line, the bisector of the total rear toe angle. If the body stands at an angle to it and the target is aligned to the body, this thrust angle remains as an error in the calibration.
- How accurate is the model in the app?
- Vehicle, dimensions and tolerances are examples. The app estimates the distance to the vehicle ahead in a simplified way from the image row of a mono camera on a level road. Real systems use further cues; the manufacturer’s specifications always apply.
