Bruch-Werkstatt: Was ein Bruch bedeutet
About this app
With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.
Numerator, denominator and equal parts
A fraction such as three quarters has a numerator and a denominator. The denominator tells you into how many equal parts the whole is split, the numerator how many of these parts are taken. The word equal matters: three of four unequal pieces are not three quarters. A fraction is also a single number with a fixed place on the number line. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, you need more than one whole: seven quarters are one whole and three quarters, written as the mixed number one and three quarters.
What the app shows
On the left the fraction is shown large and stacked, numerator over fraction bar over denominator. On the right the whole appears as a chocolate bar or a circle above a number line from 0 to 3. Each bar is exactly one unit long. A dashed line leads from the end of the coloured parts to the dot of the fraction. With more than one whole, further bars, braces and the mixed number appear. A switch splits the bar unequally and shows that the coloured area then ends next to the dot.
Try it yourself
Tap parts to colour them, or drag the dot along the number line. Change denominator and numerator with plus and minus and watch parts and dot move. Switch to unequal parts and compare ring and dot. Under Practice short random tasks are waiting: show a fraction, read a coloured fraction, put a dot on the number line and write a fraction as a mixed number. The feedback shows right in the scene why an answer is correct or not.
Frequently asked questions
- What do numerator and denominator mean?
- The denominator below the fraction bar says into how many equal parts a whole is split. The numerator above the fraction bar says how many of these parts are taken. Three quarters therefore means: split into four equal parts and take three of them.
- Why must the parts of a fraction be equal?
- Only with equal parts is each part exactly a quarter, a fifth and so on. If the pieces are unequal, three of four pieces can be more or less than three quarters. The share then depends on which pieces you take.
- Can a fraction be larger than 1?
- Yes. If the numerator is larger than the denominator, there are more parts than one whole has. Seven quarters are one whole and three quarters. This is written as the mixed number one and three quarters, and the dot lies between 1 and 2 on the number line.
- What can I try in the app?
- Tap parts or drag the dot on the number line, change numerator and denominator, switch between bar and circle, split unequally and, under Practice, show fractions, read them, find them on the number line and write them as mixed numbers.
