Brüche vergleichen und ordnen
About this app
With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.
How to compare fractions
You can compare two fractions safely when the pieces are the same size. With equal denominators you simply count pieces: 3/5 is less than 4/5. With the same numerator you take the same number of pieces, and the smaller denominator has the bigger pieces: 1/4 is greater than 1/8. Otherwise you expand both fractions to a common denominator, the least common multiple of the denominators: 3/4 = 15/20 and 4/5 = 16/20, so 3/4 is less than 4/5.
What the app shows
Two fractions lie as chocolate bars one above the other, the same length and left-aligned. The denominator divides the bar into equal pieces, the numerator colours them. Both fractions stand at the top with the comparison sign. Common denominator cuts both bars with new lines, and a bracket shows the difference. From each bar end a line drops onto the number line from 0 to 1. A lens magnifies the section between both fractions and shows the fractions that lie in between.
Try it yourself
Set numerator and denominator with plus and minus or tap a piece of a bar. Compare 1/8 with 1/4 and see why a bigger denominator means smaller pieces. For 3/4 and 4/5 both bars miss one piece, but the missing pieces have different sizes. In the Practice panel you choose the right sign, drag three fractions to their place on the number line or look for a fraction between two fractions, with feedback right in the scene.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you compare fractions with different denominators?
- Give them a common denominator: expand both fractions to the least common multiple of the denominators. Then all pieces are the same size and you compare the numerators. Example: 2/3 = 10/15 and 3/5 = 9/15, so 2/3 is greater.
- Is a fraction with a bigger denominator bigger?
- No. With the same numerator, the fraction with the bigger denominator is smaller, because the whole is cut into more and therefore smaller pieces. 1/8 is less than 1/4.
- Is there always another fraction between two fractions?
- Yes. Between two different fractions there are always more. Multiply both by 2 and you find one in the middle: between 3/4 = 30/40 and 4/5 = 32/40 lies 31/40. You can repeat this as often as you like.
- What can I try in the app?
- Set two fractions as bars, give them a common denominator, see their points on the number line and use the lens to find fractions in between. Plus practice tasks on the comparison sign, on ordering fractions on the number line and on finding a fraction in between.
