Platz für Bäume: Altstadt Reutlingen (3D)
About this app

What a city tree needs
A street tree needs room for its crown and roots. If the crown grows 10 to 12 metres wide, the trunk should stand at least 4 metres from every façade, which means about 8 metres of free street space. It also needs distance to the next tree so both crowns have room. Carriageways, utilities, underground car parks and fire brigade areas narrow the search further. That is why narrow old-town lanes often have no room, while squares, car parks and wide streets do.
What the app shows
Reutlingen old town from OpenStreetMap with all trees recorded there. The app searches the ground in cells of 2 × 2 metres and finds possible spots in about a hundred places, for example the Echazhafen car park, the market square and Wilhelmstraße. Spots that are too narrow can be shown. Tapping a surface explains why there is room or not: distance to the façade, nearest tree, width of the street space.
What you can try
Plant a place and move the time slider from 0 to 30 years. The crowns grow from 3 to over 10 metres, and the app calculates the new shade for a hot afternoon at 3 pm, plus evaporation and a cost range. With “What if it were gone?” you see how much shade a felled tree costs and how long a new one needs to reach that size.
Frequently asked questions
- How far from a building should a street tree stand?
- For a crown of 10 to 12 metres, allow at least about 4 metres from trunk to façade. Otherwise the crown grows into the buildings or must be cut constantly. Narrow lanes lack this space.
- How quickly does a newly planted tree give shade?
- Slowly. A young crown is about 3 metres across, roughly 7 m². Only after 15 to 30 years does it reach 10 metres or more. That is why it pays to plant early and to keep old trees.
- How much water does a city tree evaporate on a hot day?
- A mature tree evaporates on the order of 300 litres of water on a hot day. That cools its surroundings in addition to the shade. Young trees with small crowns evaporate much less.
- Are the spots in the app a plan?
- No. The app shows a search grid based on OpenStreetMap. It does not know underground utilities, underground car parks, fire brigade set-up areas, market days, ownership or heritage protection. It is a basis for discussion.
