Schattenatlas Altstadt Reutlingen (3D)

About this app

With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.

Why afternoon shade matters

The sun is highest around half past one, but the air is hottest between 3 and 5 pm. The sun is then in the south-west and shadows fall to the north-east. Narrow north–south lanes and east sides lie in the shade, open squares and the north sides of east–west streets in the sun. In the shade the felt temperature is about ten degrees lower than in full sun.

What the app shows

Reutlingen old town from OpenStreetMap in 3D: buildings and trees cast shadows following the real position of the sun, for a hot day in July, 21 June and mid-September. For bus stops, playgrounds, schoolyards, fountains, benches and squares the app works out which share is in the sun at 3 pm. On the hot day most bus stops and almost the whole market square lie in full sun.

Try it yourself

Play the day and watch the shadows move. Choose a place and read its shade balance from 9 am to 7 pm. Add a shade sail or a tree: the sail works at once, the tree also cools by evaporation but needs years. The shade map shows who casts the shade.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the afternoon hotter than midday?
The sun is highest at midday, but ground, facades and air keep heating up. On a hot day the air temperature usually peaks between 3 and 5 pm. By then the sun is already in the south-west and shadows fall differently from midday.
Which side of the street is shaded in the afternoon?
With the sun in the south-west, houses cast their shadow to the north-east. In east–west streets the south side lies in the shade of the houses and the north side in the sun; in north–south lanes the east sides of the houses are shaded. The same bus stop can be sunny on one side and shady on the other.
Does a tree cool more than a shade sail?
Yes. A shade sail only provides shade, about 34 degrees felt underneath on a hot afternoon. A fully grown tree also evaporates water, about 30 degrees felt underneath. The sail works at once, while a tree crown needs many years.
What can I try in the app?
Choose date and time, play the day, compare places in a ranking by share of sun, look at their shade balance over the day and add shade sails or trees. The app is a model built from OpenStreetMap data, not a measurement; it does not know utilities, ownership or heritage protection.
