Maßnahmenkarte kühle Innenstadt (3D)

About this app

With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.

Where heat protection helps most

A measure against heat works where it is hot, where people spend time and where it can be done. An asphalt car park in full sun reaches about 55 °C in the afternoon, but counts for little if hardly anyone is there. A bus stop or a busy square brings more. Trees cool most because they cast shade and evaporate water: under the crown it feels about 30 °C instead of 41 °C in the sun. But they take decades to grow a large crown. Shade sails and light surfaces work at once, but less.

What the app shows

The old town of Reutlingen in 3D from OpenStreetMap, with buildings, trees, squares, car parks, stops and playgrounds, on a hot afternoon at 3 pm with the real sun position. A priority map combines heat, people and feasibility, and three sliders set how much each factor counts. A ranking lists the eight most important places and shows them rise or fall. Trees, unsealing, shade sails and drinking fountains can be placed; the balance shows shaded area at 3 pm, rainwater, cost and cooling effect today, in 10 and in 30 years.

Try it yourself

Set the weights to “Heat only” and watch car parks move up. With “People first” bus stops jump to the top. Plant a tree on a square and a sail in a narrow lane, then move time to 30 years. Compare the three packages with the same budget: sails alone fall behind after years, trees alone leave the first summers hot, the mix never falls far behind. The list of measures can be copied as text for the minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do trees cool a street more than shade sails?
Yes, a mature tree cools more because it adds evaporative cooling to shade. On a hot afternoon it feels about 30 °C under the crown, about 34 °C under a sail and 41 °C in the sun. A young tree, however, has a crown of only about 3 metres; it takes around 30 years to reach 10 metres.
What does unsealing do against heat?
A light or open surface gets much less hot in the sun than asphalt: about 40 °C for grass pavers and 34 °C for a meadow instead of 55 °C. Rain also soaks in instead of running into the sewer. For people standing there in the afternoon, though, shade has a stronger effect than the surface alone.
Why is the hottest place not always the most important?
Because heat protection is meant to help people. A hot car park without pedestrians helps less than a hot bus stop where many people wait every day. How much heat, people and feasibility count is a trade-off a municipality can make openly.
Does the measures map replace planning?
No. The app is a model with orders of magnitude from the literature and map data from OpenStreetMap. It does not know ownership, underground utilities, fire access routes, heritage protection or individual costs. It is a basis for discussion, for example in a council working group.
