Asphalt raus: Entsiegelung Innenstadt (3D)
About this app
With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.
Why unsealing works
On a hot afternoon dark asphalt in the sun gets hotter than 50 °C and sends almost all rain into the sewer. Open-joint paving, grass pavers or meadow let water soak away and evaporate. The surface stays cooler, and less water reaches the sewer in a cloudburst. This principle is called the sponge city. Unsealing is not yes or no but a scale: light asphalt only cools, permeable surfaces cool and hold water back.
What the app shows
Reutlingen’s old town from OpenStreetMap in 3D. A heat layer shows the surface temperature at 3 pm on a hot day in mid-July, with shadows from buildings and trees following the real sun position. The sealed car parks and squares are ranked by area, heat or rainwater. All values are model values with orders of magnitude from the literature.
What you can try
Choose an area and a new surface. The area visibly cools down, and a water cube shows how much rain stays on site per year. The balance lists temperature before and after, cubic metres of rain, unsealed area and a rough cost range. One button redesigns all car parks at once, and you can compare the whole scene before and after.
Frequently asked questions
- How hot does asphalt get on a hot day?
- In full sun dark asphalt reaches surface temperatures around 55 °C on a hot afternoon, about 35 °C in the shade. Meadow stays around 34 °C in the sun.
- Does light asphalt solve the heat problem?
- Partly. Light asphalt reflects more sunlight and gets a few degrees cooler, but it stays sealed: rain still runs into the sewer and no water evaporates.
- What is a sponge city?
- A city that absorbs, stores and evaporates rain like a sponge instead of draining it straight away. Permeable surfaces, green spaces and trees cool the city and relieve the sewers in heavy rain.
- Does the app show measured values for Reutlingen?
- No. The app uses model values per surface and shade. It does not know ownership, use or the ground below the areas; it shows orders of magnitude for discussion.
