About this app

Zeitfluss einer Kfz-Werkstatt: Anwesenheit, Produktivität, Leistungsgrad, Effizienz und kostendeckender Stundenverrechnungssatz.

With explain mode: an AI tutor walks you through the app, points out what matters in the scene and answers your questions.

Productivity, performance rate, efficiency

A car workshop pays for the attendance of its technicians but can only sell the standard times of its jobs. Productivity, often called utilisation, is the share of attendance hours spent working on jobs. The performance rate relates the sold standard time to these productive hours. Their product is efficiency or overall performance: sold hours divided by attendance hours. Workshops use these terms differently; the app states its definition explicitly.

What the app shows

An invented sample workshop over one month. A time flow leads from paid attendance hours through five unproductive outflows (waiting for parts, tidying, training, internal work, rework) to productive and sold hours, also in labour units at 10 or 12 units per hour. A bracket shows how many paid hours are not sold and what they are worth in euros. Two more cards show labour revenue, staff and overhead costs, the result, and the break-even labour rate over efficiency.

Things to try

Choose the scenario “busy bays, little profit”: productivity rises to 93 percent, the performance rate drops to 76 percent, and the result turns negative. Compare “parts missing”, which reaches almost the same efficiency for a different reason. The card “Rate and efficiency” shows which higher labour rate brings the same as five percentage points more efficiency. The Values panel lists every key figure with its formula and the numbers used.

Frequently asked questions

What is the performance rate in a car workshop?
The performance rate compares the sold standard time with the time actually spent on jobs. A technician who needs 63 minutes for a job with a 60-minute standard time works at about 95 percent. Values above 100 percent mean the work was faster than the standard.
How are productivity, performance rate and efficiency related?
Efficiency, or overall performance, is productivity multiplied by the performance rate. It tells you which share of the paid attendance hours is sold as standard time. 82 percent productivity and 95 percent performance rate give 77.9 percent efficiency.
How do you calculate the break-even labour rate?
Divide the labour costs, meaning technician staff costs plus allocated overheads, by the sold hours. Equivalently, divide the cost per attendance hour by efficiency. The higher the efficiency, the lower the rate at which the workshop covers its costs.
Which figures does the app use?
The workshop and its figures are invented: six technicians, 140 attendance hours a month, a labour rate of 135 euros. Only labour is modelled, without parts revenue, discounts or apprentices. All values can be changed with sliders.
