For some tasks you can write down rules, for most of those that come easily to us you cannot. Then the machine learns the rules from examples with answers by turning its knobs.

A Mixing Desk, a Seven, a Face in the Shadow: What Is Machine Learning?

Prof. Dr. Dirk SchiebornAM3 Data Analysis and Machine Learning · Reutlingen University

NewOct 30, 2026 · 6 chapters

An explainer film in six chapters, made from a real lecture: learning as turning the knobs of a mixing desk and as walking downhill in fog, the four blocks from classification to neural networks, Fermat’s last theorem and why we are witnesses of AI, why an even number can be recognised by a rule and a handwritten seven cannot, how a machine learns from examples with answers, and why face recognition with masks failed. Pause anywhere and ask.
