Channelrhodopsin: a light switch for nerve cells
The green alga Chlamydomonas swims towards light; its eyespot carries channelrhodopsin. In a nerve cell, blue light opens this ion channel: cations flow in, the voltage jumps above threshold, and each light pulse triggers an action potential. Pulse rate, light intensity and yellow light with halorhodopsin as a brake.
