30 questions
For class B you get 20 questions from the basic material (Grundstoff) and 10 from the class-specific material (Zusatzstoff). You answer them on a tablet or computer at the testing centre, such as TÜV or DEKRA.
Driving theory
Almost every second theory test for a car licence in Germany ends in a fail. If you understand the rules instead of memorising answers, you recognise a question even when it is asked differently. Here you see what the test requires, try right of way, stopping distance and overtaking in interactive apps, and learn the German terms in your own language too.
Theory test
For class B you get 20 questions from the basic material (Grundstoff) and 10 from the class-specific material (Zusatzstoff). You answer them on a tablet or computer at the testing centre, such as TÜV or DEKRA.
Each question carries 2 to 5 error points (Fehlerpunkte). Questions on right of way and hazards usually weigh heavily.
With more than 10 error points you fail. Two wrong questions worth 5 points each also mean a fail.
Many questions show a traffic situation as a picture or short video. Since 1 April 2025 the question catalogue contains additional picture questions.
Before the test you register with a driving school (Fahrschule) and apply at the driving licence authority (Fahrerlaubnisbehörde). You usually need an eye test (Sehtest) and a first aid course (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs). Your local authority tells you exactly what applies.
Failure rate
According to the TÜV association, 44 percent of class B theory tests were failed in 2025, and 45 percent in 2024.
If you only recognise answers, you stumble when a question shows a different picture or is worded differently. Right of way, stopping distance and hazards are about relationships: who goes first when a sign is added? How long is the braking distance at twice the speed?
Then there is the language. The test uses fixed German terms such as “Vorfahrt gewähren” (give way) or “Gefahrbremsung” (emergency braking). If you are still learning German, you lose points here although you know the rule.
Our apps show you the situation, not the answer. You change speed, signs or distance and see what happens.
Interactive apps
Each app shows a typical test situation that you can change yourself. Free, in your browser, no account. In explain mode an AI tutor walks you through the app and answers your questions.
Priority to the right, priority road, a priority road that turns: move signs and vehicles and see who may go first.
Reaction distance plus braking distance: change the speed and watch the stopping distance grow, including emergency braking.
Find the hazards in a street scene before they happen: children playing, cyclists, a car door opening.
When may you overtake, and how much room do you need? Oncoming traffic, distance and no-overtaking zones step by step.
Six chapters from priority to the right to turning. The film stops and asks you questions like the test. In 13 languages.
Watch the filmReaction distance, braking distance, 30 versus 50, wet roads and keeping your distance in six chapters. The film stops and asks you questions like the test, including calculations. In 13 languages.

The theory test is available in German and twelve other languages. Many languages spoken in Germany are not among them. For these we built pages that explain the test in your language and show every term in two languages: yours to understand it, German for the test.
Test languages besides German: English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish, Standard Arabic. With a German word list and apps explained in your language.
Licence reform 2027
The German government wants to make driver training cheaper and more digital. Nothing has been passed yet: the bill is before the Bundestag, and the changes are planned to take effect from early 2027 (as of 27 October 2026).
For driving schools
Once compulsory attendance is dropped, driving schools can teach theory digitally. heyprof is a learning platform on which you set up your own courses with material, exercises and an AI tutor that answers only on the basis of your material.
Frequently asked questions
30 questions: 20 from the basic material and 10 from the class B material.
At most 10. Each question carries 2 to 5 error points. Two wrong questions worth 5 points each mean a fail, even if everything else is right.
According to the TÜV association, 44 percent failed the class B theory test in 2025 (2024: 45 percent).
In German and in English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish, Standard Arabic.
Stopping distance = reaction distance + braking distance. German driving schools teach a rule of thumb: reaction distance = (speed in km/h ÷ 10) × 3, braking distance = (speed ÷ 10)² in metres, half of that for emergency braking. At 50 km/h that is 15 m + 25 m = 40 m.
Digital theory lessons, a smaller question catalogue and a simpler scoring system are planned. None of this has been passed yet. Until it takes effect, today’s rules apply.
Yes. They run in the browser on phone, tablet and computer, without an account.
No. The apps help you understand. For a licence you need a driving school; legal questions are answered by the driving licence authority.
